Meniscal tears are very common injuries that occur when the cartilage in your knee joint is damaged and needs repair. If you’ve injured your knee it is important to seek an immediate evaluation from a physician who specializes in orthopedic injuries. Great Lakes Orthopedics and Sports Medicine has several physicians on staff that are well-qualified to help treat or surgically repair for meniscal tear.

The method of treatment used to address your tear will depend on where the tear is specifically located as well as the pattern of the tear. Small tears on the outer edge of the meniscus are normally treated with at-home rest, larger tears will likely require surgery. If you experience a tear on the inner meniscus your surgeon may or may not recommend surgery.

If surgery is performed you should expect to keep your knee completely immobilized for up to two weeks afterwards. Physical therapy will also be recommended to optimize your recovery. Great Lakes Orthopedics and Sports Medicine offers physical therapy treatment here in our clinic for your convenience and comfort.

If surgery is not recommended for your tear you should expect to rest your knee often, use ice to ease your pain and keep it elevated often. Physical therapy in our office may also be recommended.
