History of Great Lakes Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, P.C.
Dr. Keith Pitchford grew up in suburban Lansing, IL. He went to the University of Illinois and attended medical school in the Chicago area. He completed his fellowship in Sports Medicine in 1996 out of Peoria, IL. Initially, he joined a practice in the western suburbs, got married and had his first child. Dr. Pitchford is very much a Midwesterner. When he and his wife Shelley, who is also from the Region, were expecting their second child, they decided to relocate closer to family. In 2000, they decided on a home in Northwest Indiana and started Great Lakes Orthopedics from the ground up so Dr. Pitchford could serve the community for which he has known his entire life.
Great Lakes Orthopedics and Sports Medicine started off in a small rental space in Crown Point, IN just a few days a week. It was not long until we expanded to Dyer, IN, as well as to a larger office space in Crown Point, IN. In a newer and larger Crown Point location, we were able to offer our patients the Physical Therapy services they needed. In 2006, we were still growing and left the rental office for a brand new building in St. John, IN. We were extremely proud to open our very own facility in St. John, near Route 41, on October 22, 2006. The new facility is a combined footprint of clinical space shared with our Physical Therapy services providing conveniences for our patients. With the orthopedic practice and physical therapy services sharing the same location, it provides a wonderful cohesive environment for our patients. Our physicians work very closely with our physical therapists to give our patients the optimum level of care they deserve.
When it comes time to hiring new physicians, Dr. Pitchford prefers to hire associates that are also from the region. Physicians that not only take pride in their work but also take pride in their community and are truly a part of it! In 2014, Dr. Natasha Mandula joined our practice. Dr. Mandula grew up in Crown Point, IN and is a wonderful Podiatrist. Tim Williams, our physician assistant, is from Bourbonnais, IL. He also makes the region his home now. Dr. Pitchford feels that it is important for any physician to be a part of the community in which they serve. He has tried, at great length, to put together a team of dedicated, compassionate and “region” associates to best serve our communities and our patients.
Our staff and physicians are dedicated to our local communities, especially our children. We all volunteer our time to provide school physicals each year, and stand on the sidelines for numerous football games, and other sporting events to care for our young athletes from several local high schools.
Great Lakes Orthopedics and Sports Medicine is also proud to be the team physicians for the Gary Southshore Railcats, since their inception, and to house a local fencing club that competes nationally. But nothing makes us more proud than to know that you, our community, has trusted us for so long with your undying support. Every day we are getting bigger and better, thanks to you!! Thank you for the honor of allowing us to provide you orthopedic care over the years.
